The Cape Epic is the world’s toughest mountain bike race also. Held in the Western Cape region of South Africa, it pits participants against eight days of relentlessly rough terrain with almost constant climbing and descending, and searing temperatures. Riders compete in teams of two but there are no teams cars and no mechanical assistance here. Racers rely on their teammates, and sleep beside them too at organized camps between the stages. To tackle the Cape Epic, you’d better be more than just teammates but firm friends as well.
