For the first time, Monuments of Cycling is bringing its iconic form of racing to the 45th parallel, where a vibrant cycling culture anxiously awaits this new spectacle soon to be known as The Hell of the Great Lakes. Now, with the brand new MoMITT Bike Fest offering multiple bike racing events and celebration in Michigan, the BWR MI promises to allure a deep field of regional and world class road, gravel, cyclocross and mountain bike racers looking to take on the beautiful and challenging terrain. The BWR, celebrating 11 years of pedaling perversity in 2022, will provide professional and amateur cyclists alike the opportunity to ride the most coveted roads, punctuated by dozens of gravel and single track unroad sectors throughout the region. This new territory promises the unique complexion of road and unroad dynamics that are hallmarks of the BWR offering.
This October, the MoMITT Bike Fest is bringing the beastie back to bike racing in Michigan. This weekend long festival will include a refreshing menu of spectator friendly bike races, an Expo featuring local crafts and global bike brands, a large beer garden, multiple food options, live music and a venue with tons of family fun, set at Mt. Holiday in Traverse City. The highlight Belgian Waffle Ride (s) will bring out the gravelleurs as well as the unroad-curious road racers, the Black Chili XC will be a modern multi-lap cross country refresh of fat tire racing, and Shorty’s Blitz will have a 40-mile multi-terrain course sure to tax riders in new and untold ways; combining road, gravel and dirt sectors for a day of insanity.
The 2022 Belgian Waffle Ride Michigan Will Take Place in Traverse City
In Traverse City, it’s not about any one thing. Or two things. It’s about everything, all of it coming together in the simplest, and most natural way. This unique venue has everything riders and families need to quench their thirst for adventure with awe-inspiring moments. Traverse City will be a perfect home base for visitors to explore all that the area has on offer, before, during and after the MoMITT Bike Fest.
It’s easy to roll from one thing to the next as smoothly and fluidly as the roads and trails of this bike buzzing town, Traverse City. Tour the wineries, scale a dune at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, or push off the Lake Michigan shoreline for a sunset cruise. Along with a host of close beach towns and bike hubs nearby, including Charlevoix, Sutton’s Bay, Glen Arbor, and Bellaire.
The BWR, created as an extremely challenging race in the spirit of the great European one-day Spring Classics, is a truly unique series of races in North America. There will be two distances on offer in Michigan; the longer Waffle Ride, roughly 130-miles, and the half-as-long Wafer Ride for those looking to get a taste of the glory without the full-time training commitment the full Waffle requires.
This inaugural BWR Michigan race, like other BWR’s in California, N. Carolina, Utah, and Kansas, will have a deep field of professional riders and an expansive list of hungry amateur riders drawn to the unparalleled opportunity to race alongside their heroes. Like World Tour rider Peter Stetina, World Tour rider and local legend Alexey Vermeulen, and mountain bike champions Brennan Wertz and Hannah Otto. The Waffle will be offering prize purse to the top three riders, both female and male! Racers and event patrons will be treated to Belgian waffles and ales, frites, and a variety of culinary delights, more waffles and more beer on race weekend.
The MoMITT Bike Fest will take place at Mt. Holiday in Traverse City, promising to be Michigan’s premier bike festival for an annual gathering of riders and cycling celebration! Stay tuned for more details, along with a host of other unique entertainment features. Attendees can peruse a wide range of goods from local businesses, event sponsors, vendors, and of course the full force of the Belgian themed BWR offerings.
